A lot of those builds just list the "best in slot" but in reality the build can still work with other guns, just maybe not at M10 level. Stuff like Relics and COMs might be the biggest factor due to the special effects those have. So if you find a build with non-dlc COMS/relics you should be good just finding decent guns to slot in.
